Gold Coast Writers’ Association
Where Words Come Alive on the Coast
When writers first put pen to paper, the blank page can feel both thrilling and daunting. But what if there was a place you could go where that uncertainty turns into momentum, community, and creative confidence?
The Gold Coast Writers’ Association (GCWA) is one of South-East Queensland’s most vibrant literary communities.
A Community Built for Writers, By Writers
Founded back in 1990 as Writers at the Fair by Mary and Ray Maclaren, the GCWA has grown into a volunteer-led not-for-profit organisation dedicated to encouraging writers of all genres and experience levels.
Their mission is simple but powerful:
to support, educate, and inspire writers across the Gold Coast and beyond.
Whether you’re a first-time novelist, a seasoned poet, or someone with an unpublished story tucked in a drawer, GCWA’s door is open. Members and visitors alike are welcomed to monthly meetings, workshops, networking events, and critique groups that help writers sharpen their craft and stay connected.
📅 What Happens at a GCWA Meeting?
Each monthly gathering is more than just a meet-and-greet — it’s a creative boost. Typically held at the Burleigh Waters Community Centre, meetings bring together writers to:
-
Hear from guest speakers sharing real-world writing and publishing insights
-
Take part in hands-on workshops
-
Connect with other storytellers over tea and conversation
-
Share work and get feedback in a supportive environment
-
Learn practical steps for their writing journey (from editing to publishing)
For example, the recent February 2026 session featured author Jodie Lane, who delved into the critical question every writer faces after typing “The End” — what next? Her talk covered beta reading, editing, formatting and even tipping points for getting published. That’s the kind of real-world guidance that turns concepts into completed projects.
🤝 More Than Meetings: Membership Benefits That Matter
Becoming a member unlocks perks that can make a genuine difference to an author’s journey — from discounts on events and the chance to sell your books at GCWA meetings, to members-only critique groups and even promotional opportunities on the GCWA website and social channels.
There’s also an annual Andy McDermott Achievement Award recognising those who have contributed significantly to the community and their own writing pursuits — a meaningful way to celebrate milestones and inspire others.
📚 A Blog Full of Writer Wisdom
If you love to learn and grow, the GCWA blog is a treasure trove of writing advice. From tips on character development and editing techniques to reflections on creativity and publishing experiences, the range of posts offers something for everyone, no matter where they are on their literary path.
🌟 Why Writers Love GCWA
At its heart, the Gold Coast Writers’ Association is about more than craft — it’s about connection.
It’s the writer who finally meets others who get it. The emerging author who learns how to take their work from draft to publication. The seasoned storyteller who finds a fresh spark through community feedback. GCWA is where the words we dream about writing become words we share with the world.
